What a great combination : one of the oldest public houses in
Henley-on-Thames (complete with oak beams, 14th century cellar, 17th
Century interior, and check out the ceilings in the Gent's toilet), some of
the best beer in the South (Brakspear's, naturally),
all-day opening (should you get thirsty with all that rowing and rugby) -
coupled with a great, lively atmosphere & bar staff .....how could you
not want to visit for a drink ??
The
Bell has recently been taken over by Britt (the Viking) & Jackie (the
Welsh one who likes Tom Jones & Rugby) following an extensive refurbishment.
Gone, sadly, is the original bleak 1950's interior, nicotine coloured walls,
miserable welcome and soggy pensioner's lunches that it became renowned for
over the years: “in” are great real ales, quality lunches (including some
Norwegian specialities), livelier "younger" atmosphere and
tasteful decor. Wednesday night also boasts live music from Damian (with
choruses generally supplied by the locals). And for those of you not
so fond of one of the best kept ales in Oxfordshire, check out also the
speciality extensive wine list & Vodka Bar - at least 10 flavours that
are changed weekly.
